The University Museum, extension

University of Pennsylvania, 34th & Spruce streets, Philadelphia PA
1921-29; extant

After the completion of the dome of the western courtyard of The University Museum in 1915, further expansion eastward was envisioned. Schemes were reconsidered by the successor firms, Wilson Eyre & McIlvaine, Stewardson & Page, and Day & Klauder. Various forms were proposed for the elements of this main court, ranging from more Lombardic to more Mediterranean, with strongly projecting porches. The even larger rotunda was replaced in some schemes with great longitudinal or transverse halls. Ultimately, Eyre's more welcoming scheme with an inset porch and open arcade was adopted, though the rest of the design was not executed. A street and other buildings were constructed at what would be the site of the eastern courtyard, and the loose ends were artfully tied in the 1960s by Mitchell/Giurgola Architects.
