Undergraduate Major in Architecture

A major in Architecture [ARCH] has been established in the College of Arts and Sciences to replace the major in Design of the Environment [DENV]. The mission of the program is to develop basic skills, knowledge, and methods of inquiry in the discipline of architecture in the context of an undergraduate studio-based liberal arts education. Although the major resides in the College of Arts and Sciences, the studio and theory courses are taught by faculty in the Department of Architecture and the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning in the Graduate School of Fine Arts.

"With an undergraduate major in Architecture," commented Richard Wesley, Undergraduate Program Chair, "the University will offer a full spectrum of architectural education ranging from freshman seminars; a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with a major in Architecture; a Master of Architecture (M.Arch) Professional Degree with Post-Professional Options; a Master of Science (M.S.) in Architecture; and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Architecture. The opportunity to engage in the study of architecture on these various levels, combined with the possibilities of cross-disciplinary studies within the School of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School of Fine Arts, places the University in a unique position among its peers. The study of architecture on all levels within the University will be enriched by these potential vertical and horizontal connections."

Beginning in January 2001 the design studios for the major in Architecture will be located in newly renovated Addams Hall on the corner of 36th and Walnut.
