New Minor and Major in Architecture

A collaborative effort between the GSFA's Department of Architecture and the School of Arts and Sciences has resulted in a number of significant changes to the curriculum of the Undergraduate Program in Architecture. "These changes," commented Richard Wesley, Chair of the Undergraduate Program, "provide for the study of architecture as a studio-based liberal arts discipline on three levels of engagement: a Minor in Architecture; a Major in Architecture with a concentration in either Design or History, Theory, and Criticism; and an Intensive Major in Architecture, allowing undergraduate students in their senior year to take graduate-level courses in the Department of Architecture."

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) with a Minor in Architecture offers undergraduates the opportunity to major in another subject within the College of Arts and Sciences while fulfilling the minimum prerequisites for admission to a three-year Master of Architecture professional degree program. It consists of 8 course units including 6 course units in Architecture and 2 course units in Art History. The Major in Architecture requires 16 course units in either of the two concentrations: History, Theory, and Criticism, requiring 8 course units in Architecture, 6 course units in Art History, and 2 course units in other courses within the School of Arts and Sciences; and Design, requiring 12 course units in Architecture and 4 course units in Art History. Students in the Design concentration who are admitted into the Intensive Major in Architecture will take an additional 4 course units in Architecture and qualify for one year of Advanced Standing in the 3-year Master of Architecture degree program.
