Architectural Conservation Laboratory
The Architectural Conservation Laboratory of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation is devoted to training and research in the conservation of the built environment. This technical facility, designed specifically for teaching and research in architectural conservation, provides a unique intellectual environment for those pursuing technical studies within the Graduate School of Fine Arts and the University. The laboratory encourages collaboration between academic and professional resources, addressing major technical issues and field training related to culturally significant buildings, monuments, and sites throughout the world. Cooperative agreements have been established with private and public agencies, both nationally and internationally. Projects ranging from materials analysis, testing and treatment evaluation to conservation field work provide both summer and advanced academic year internships for students from Penn and guest institutions. Selected projects also provide funded opportunities for students pursuing the Advanced Certificate in Architectural Conservation.
Through grants and sponsored projects, the faculty and staff of the Architectural Conservation Laboratory , in collaboration with other University centers such as the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter, conduct a full agenda of research dedicated to historic building technology and the technical examination, recording, materials characterization and treatment evaluation of historic buildings, monuments, and sites.
