Born in Boston and
educated at Harvard, Chandler studied architecture both in this country
and in Paris at the Atelier Vaudremer. Upon his return to the United
States he opened an office in Boston before moving to Philadelphia and
practicing professionally there until late in life. During his active
design years Chandler executed a series of commercial buildings and
residences, however is best remembered for his ecclesiastical designs.
Among his most important churches in Philadelphia were the Swedenborgian
Church and the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. Chandler was a co-founder
of the A.I.A.'s Phildelphia Chapter and served as the first Director
of the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
About the Collection
The drawings, photographs,
office records, paintings and etchings are on indefinite loan from his
family. Included in the Collection are office records (1885-90), diary
(1877), fifteen photographs, six student drawings, twenty-three rubbings
from English churches, fifty-three non-architectural drawings, oils,
and watercolors.
