Computing Policies and Procedures

Priorities Networking (Wired & Wireless)

When demand for computing resources exceeds available capacity, priorities for their use will be established and enforced. Authorized faculty and staff from various School of Design departments can set and alter priorities for local computing/networking resources within their respective departments. The Computing Center will do the same for the Studios and Labs under its care, seeking to balance the needs of all School of Design users. The overall priorities for use of Graduate School of Fine Arts computing resources are: Highest: Uses that directly support the educational, research and service missions of the School of Design. The following locations get staff support in order of priority: Computing Center Lab, Satellite Labs, all other School of Design studio machines.

Medium: Other uses that indirectly benefit the education, research and service missions of the School of Design, including reasonable and limited personal communications.

Lowest: Recreation web surfing and news reading

Forbidden: Activities that consume network bandwidth; such as, game playing, music services or peer-to-peer networking (filesharing).

Each studio desk is equipped with a dedicated 10Mb wired network port to provide access to the Internet and various PennDesign network resources. As a comparison, that’s about 200x the speed of a modem and at least 10-20x the speed of most high speed Internet Service Providers. This speed is critical when working with large files prevalent in the design field.

Wireless Networking, while perfect for reading e-mail and browsing the internet, is not recommended when connecting to PennDesign resources. This said, there is a wireless zone located between the Meyerson gallery which provides access to much of the basement through 3rd floor (note that transfer rates decrease the farther away you get). Simply open your web browser and login using your PennKey information. For more information on Wireless at Penn, see the following website: www.upenn.edu/computing/wireless
