PennDesign Computing Help
E-Mail FAQs
Note! The University of Pennsylvania recently completed a major upgrade to the Email service provided to several schools and organizations on campus, including PennDesign. This new service uses the same backend software (Zimbra) that runs several Yahoo!® services. It offers an integrated suite of tools including Email, calendaring, tasks, and contacts. The web interface (webmail.design.upenn.edu) is a significant improvement over the previous Webmail service. The “Advanced (AJAX)” interface is supported by most modern we browsers and features drag and drop capabilities which give it the look and feel of a stand-alone client (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.).
Enhanced Security E-mail Accounts
In an effort to support the University's network security guidelines, PennDesign students are provided with Enhanced Security Email accounts. While offering a higher standard of security, these accounts do limit the number of supported clients. See the following website for details regarding the difference between Basic and Enhanced security: www.upenn.edu/computing/email/help/Email/basic-enhanced.html
Accessing Enhanced Security E-mail Accounts
Webmail
- The easiest way to access your PennDesign Email account is via the web using the following address:

Supported Stand-alone Email Clients
- If you prefer a stand-alone Email client, see the following sites for details regarding University supported products:
- Thunderbird 2.0.0.x (Windows and Mac OS)
- Apple Mail (Mac OS)
- Configuring Apple Mail for use with your PennDesign account
- Note: each client requires authentication using a Kerberos Ticket Manager prior to launching the Email client. See the following sites for details regarding University supported products:
- Kerberos for Windows
- Kerberos for Macintosh
E-mail Account Services
- Some helpful Email services are accessible via the web by selecting "Account Services" from the Webmail login page page referenced above. Following are some of the services available from this interface:
- Mail Forwarding - Used to have message forwarded to an alternate Email address.
- Vacation Message – Configure an auto-reply to anyone who sends a message to your address. This is also useful if you wish to inform senders of a new address.
