Networking

Windows XP Configuration on PennDesign Network

Physical Connection & TCP/IP Configuration
In order to access the Internet and various PennDesign resources such as printers, network storage, etc., you will need to connect your Personal Computer to an active network port and configure the network settings from the Windows Control Panel.
Network Ports
Active network ports are marked with a red tag. There should be 1 active port for each seat in the studios. If the port is taken at your seat, then there should be an open port at a desk near you. Feel free to shuffle cables around. cables are distributed at the Lab Assistant desk on the 3rd Floor of Meyerson Hall. Certification is required for Windows PCs. Physical connection to the network is easy. Plug one end of the network cable into the network port on your computer. Plug the other end of the network cable into an active network port at or near your desk.
Configuring TCP/IP
  1. Open the Network Connections Control Panel.
  2. Right-Click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
  3. Double-click the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) icon in the components list.
  4. Select the options to Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically (should be the defaults).
  5. Click the Advanced button to open Advanced TCP/IP Settings window.
    a. Click the WINS Tab
    b. Click the Add button and enter both of the following numbers:
    130.91.228.40
    130.91.228.41
  6. Click the DNS Tab.
  7. Uncheck the "Register this connections address..." option.
  8. Click the OK button, then restart the computer.

Optional steps for Windows XP Desktops Only. Laptop users are discouraged from running these scripts because a persistent connection is created to network resource. Errors will result when laptops are removed from the PennDesign network. In addition, these scripts will not work with Vista or the 64-bit version of Windows XP.

Before continuing... You must know your PennDesign username and password. If you have a new PennDesign account, you must change your default password by logging on to a public PennDesign computer or the PennDesign Remote Access web interface. You will then be prompted to change your password. Your computer MUST be a member of the Design workgroup (see step 1D in the PC Certification process).

  2. Select the Run Command from the "Start" menu.
  3. Enter \\juno\public\scripts in the Open field, then press Enter
If prompted for a password, enter <username>@design.upenn.edu in the "Connect As" field, and then enter your PennDesign password. (Replace <username> with your PennDesign username).
  4. Double-click the 1-MapDrive.bat file and follow the script instructions.
Connecting to the Print Server: Vulcan

  1. Select the Run Command from the "Start" menu.
  2. Enter \\juno\public\scripts in the Open field, then press Enter
If prompted for a password, enter <username>@design.upenn.edu in the "Connect As" field, and then enter your PennDesign password. (Replace <username> with your PennDesign username).
  3. Double-click the 2-NetPrint.bat file and follow the script instructions.

All available printers will be displayed in the \\vulcan window. Double-click desired printers with an MEYS or ADDM prefix. A dialog box will appear indicating that the printer must be setup before you can use it. Click the "Yes" button to continue. A Printer window will open displaying any pending print jobs. This indicates that the printer was installed successfully.
