Software FAQ's

Installing KeyServer Applications - PC

Many of the software titles available in the PennDesign labs are also available for installation to your own studio computer. Most of this software can be installed via the network, while the others require installation from CD (CDs are available from your instructor or the computing staff).

In order to distribute software and maintain compliance with our licensing agreements, PennDesign uses a product called KeyServer (K2) to meter available application licenses. In order to run these "Keyed" applications, you must install a client to your personal computer and use it to login to the PennDesign network before installing applications. Some of the products will only work while your computer is physically located in Meyerson Hall.

Following are step-by-step instructions for installing the KeyServer Client (K2) software on your computer:

Select the Run command from the "Start" menu.
Enter \\juno\public in the open field, then click OK.
When prompted, enter design\<your username> followed by your PennDesign password.
Open the Installs\Keyserver folder.
Double-click the K2Client.exe file to run the setup program.
Enter "cerberus.design.upenn.edu" in the Host DNS Name.
Accept all defaults on this and the following pages, then click the Install button.
When installation is complete, restart your computer.

You should now be able to install and run all software distributed by PennDesign on \\juno\public\installs. Please read the install.txt file in each application folder as it contains information required for successful software installation.

Software installs for Mac users must be done by an appointment-by-appointment basis. You will need to contact a member of the ITS staff to have this configured. Some of the products will only work while your computer is physically located in Meyerson Hall.

Following are step-by-step instructions for installing the KeyServer Client (K2) software for the Mac operating system:

Connect to smb://juno.design.upenn.edu/
Enter your PennKey and Password
Select Public
Go to Installs:MacSoftware-OS X:Keyserver 6
Drag K2Client.dmg to your Desktop
Double-click on K2Client.dmg, on your Desktop
Launch K2Client.mpkg
Use "Defaults"
KeyServer Address: Cerberus

A few notes about KeyServer

If all licenses have already been checked out when you attempt to launch a Keyed application, you will be given the option to reserve a license. If you accept this option, you will be informed via a message box and an audible beep (assuming you have speakers) as soon as a license becomes available. You have 5 minutes from that point to launch the application before losing your reservation.

It may be necessary to reserve licenses for instructional use during classes. In the event there are too many licenses checked out to give to the class, the license may be taken from you. If this occurs, a close command will be sent to your application, but you will be given the opportunity to save your work. For more information, please feel free to check out the KeyServer website.

Following are step-by-step instructions for installing software onto your computer via the network:
Windows XP: login using your PennDesign local administrator account.
Select the Run command from your Start Menu.
Enter \\juno\public\ in the Open field, then press enter.
When prompted enter design\<your username> and your PennDesign password.
You now have access to all license-managed software.
Navigate to the Installs folder.
Install software following the instructions in the Installs.txt file in each folder.

Each folder contains an install.txt file that contains instructions specific to that application. Please read these carefully before attempting to run the setup program.

A Security Tip from Penn’s Information Systems and Computing (ISC):

Don’t install free utilities, such as filesharing software, Internet accelerators, toolbars, and other purportedly useful pieces of software of unknown origin. Many of these tools come loaded with adware and spyware, which consume your computer’s resources, reroute your network connection, and bring your computer to a grinding halt. Always check with your Local Support Provider before installing software, if you have questions.
