The Vidar Large Format Scanner

Scanning Schedule

Scans will be ready approximately 24 hours after drop off. Please, do not submit more than two jobs per 24 hour period. During summer hours of operation all jobs should be submitted through e-mail request to the PennDesign ITS staff.

The maximum width for a scanned document is 52 inches long.

Procedures

  • Remove all stapes from the document.
  • Apply fixitive or acrylic coating to graphite, charcoal, or any other media type that produces smudges. NO EXECTIONS!
  • Complete a Scan Request Form, with the required info filled in, at the time you submit your work for scanning. You can download a copy here or obtain one from the Student Worker Desk. Art work can be submitted at the desk next to the Student Worker area in 321 Meyerson Hall. The table is clearly marked for incoming and outgoing art work.
  • Thin papers, such as tracing paper, will not be scanned unless it is fixed to a thicker backing. We cannot guarantee that thin papers will not be damaged during the scanning process.
  • In addition to thin papers, transparent or translucent papers also have tremendous difficulty with being scanned with the Vidar. Such materials will also need to be attached to backing, preferably white.
  • Scans will be placed in a folder named after the submitting student's username (example, janedoe@design.upenn.edu will have her work placed in a folder named janedoe) on \\mey-pclab-vidar. This can be accessed only from within the Design network (from within Addams, Meyerson or Durhing buildings) by the following two methods:
  • PC: open the Run prompt (Start Menu/Run - you may need to preface your credentials with "design\username") and type \\mey-pclab-vidar, follwed by Enter.
  • Mac: from the Finder, select Go/Go to folder/connect to Server or Apple+K and type smb://mey-pclab-var.
  • For further questions, please contact the IT staff.

Improperly prepared documents will not be scanned!
