Evening Keynote Lecture Laser Cleaning: Italian Case Studies

The processing of the construction site of a historical building will be presented as a general introduction. A short video will show the highlights of the restoration of the Florence Baptistery focusing on the use of different kind of lasers. After that we will introduce the restoration of the building step by step: cleaning, consolidation, protection. The importance of laser technology in monumental restoration projects will be discussed and then we will elaborate on the specific characteristics of the laser systems employed on the Baptistery. The presentation will end with other examples of laser cleaning restoration in Florence.
Laura Bartoli
Dr. Bartoli graduated in Physics and earned her Ph.D. in Science for the Conservation for Cultural Heritage at the University of Florence, Italy. She started working as a researcher at the Institute for Applied Physics “N. Carrara” of the Italian National Council for Research mainly focusing her activity on the study of laser- matter interaction for the optimization of laser systems dedicated to the cleaning of Cultural Heritage. She is the author and co-author of many scientific papers dealing with laser and neutron techniques applied at the conservation of artworks. She is currently working in the Conservation Technologies Department of the El.En. S.p.A. Company in Calenzano (Florence) where she is in charge of the production for lasers dedicated to the cleaning of Cultural Heritage.
Jacopo Mannucci
Jacopo Mannucci began working in restoration at the age of 16 in his family’s business. In 2002 he completed several professional courses, including a course that qualified him as a restorer of stone materials. In July 2010 he graduated in architecture, and while a student, worked as a restorer in the family enterprise. The same year he graduated as Collaborator Restorer according to the Art. 182 of Italian Legislative Decree n. 42. In 2011 he enrolled in the Order of the Architects of Florence. He has completed many professional courses, including safety on the construction site and energy certifier, and is a member of the selection boards in Italian construction. His main occupation is managing the restoration of significant sites, such as churches and historic buildings. He is also involved in the restoration of stone, marble, and frescos, including consolidation, cleaning and protection. Recent projects include serving as the technical director of the restoration of the Florence Baptistery (Italy), the restoration of the roof and the facade of the Strozzi Palace in Florence (Italy), facades of the Ducal Palace in Venice (Italy), the Dante Statue in Santa Croce Square in Florence (Italy), and a graffito facade of a palace in Nice (France).
