ITALIAN GARDENS AROUND ROME

The Italian peninsula has long had a prominent reputation for its formal landscapes beginning with the gardens of the Roman Empire.

The following examples of Italian formal gardens are chosen because they reflect some of the original theories and design intentions of the historic landscape of Rome's Orto Botanico.

Via arrangements for the students to visit these gardens, the program intends to help put the landscape of the Orto into historical context, and also provides examples and precedents for different practices and theories of garden restoration in Italy today.
