PRELIMINARY PROPOSALS FOR THE ORTO

The Trition Fountain at the time of the project. (UPenn 2002)

Based on this analysis, the team compiled a preliminary list of proposals that best address the identified areas of concern. There are several areas of concern that should be addressed with urgency. Many of them focus on general maintenance issues and minor changes to enhance the aesthetic value of Orto visit and also make it a more safe and inviting place.

Beyond the initial proposals, there are a number of issues that are subjects for further research. Of paramount importance is the ambiguous relationship between the Orto and the public. Currently, the Orto is a research specimen garden that conducts a number of important studies about the natural growth of plants. This botanical program is in direct conflict with the need to maintain the garden in such a way as to please and accommodate the visiting public. Ways to mitigate this contradiction and provide alternatives to the current relationship is of great importance.

Also of importance is the psychological and physical connection between the Orto Botanico and the neighboring areas. Currently, the Orto is maintained as a separate entity without emphasizing the importance of its relationship to the Janiculum Hill and Trastevere. The proposals involving landscape design, mpping, and public outreach, if enacted, would help connection and further incorporate the Orto with its environs.
