Detlef Mertins

is Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair of Architecture at the University of Toronto. Mertins is currently visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania and has taught at Princeton University, Columbia University, Harvard University, Rice University, and the Architecture Association. In 1999/2000 he was professional advisor for the Downsview Park Competition in Toronto. His essays on the history and theory of architectural modernity have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. Most recently, he contributed major essays for the exhibition catalogues, Mies in Berlin (Museum of Modern Art) and Mies in America (Canadian Centre for Architecture and Whitney Museum of American Art), as well as the introduction to Walter Curt Behrendt, The Victory of the New Building Style (The Getty). He is currently completing a monograph on Mies (Phaidon) and co-editing a translation of the avant-garde journal G: Material for Elementary Form-Creation (1923-26) (Monacelli).
