Bridges of Transition: After visiting the Mississippi Delta, I was most struck by the quietness of the old part of town in contrast with the busy highway strip. As with the cross roads, I saw Highway 61 and the river as two lines. I wanted to explore the land that connected the two. I chose three sites: Vicksburg, Greenville and Clarksdale. Each site was distinctive in its situation and character. I brought the river and highway measures onto each site, representing the whole Delta in each place. I reinterpreted the measures at each site, coming up with an individual program for each one. Vicksburg is the most dramatic with its position between the river and the bluffs. Greenville is the most urban, with its long strip connecting it to Leland. There are many gas stations, hotels and restaurants along this strip. Clarksdale is the most removed from the river, separated by a refuge. There are also several roads that meet at Clarksdale.
