Architecture Summer Preparatory Studio
Candidates who have substantially fulfilled the requirements for admission to
the Master of Architecture program but who require additional design experience
may be required to attend an intensive summer design studio prior to matriculation.
This studio, held for seven weeks during the summer, introduces students to basic
three-dimensional design studies and simple architectural studio investigations.
The program for such students is three and one-half years (7 semesters) in length.

but are unable to enroll. A request in writing, accompanied by the non-refundable
acceptance fee deposit, must be addressed to the Chair of the department

Please note: Department of Architecture
and Department of Fine Arts DO
NOT grant deferrals. top
Submatriculation
Professional preparation or graduate work in Architecture or Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning may be taken by outstanding students in the College of Arts and Sciences with an undergraduate major in Architecture. Submatriculation may be formally applied for during the junior year by students who have completed all the requirements for their major, as well as all general requirements and electives. Accepted submatriculation candidates may complete their entire Master of Architecture or Master of Landscape Architecture degree program in two years following their senior year, which in these special cases doubles as the first year of the graduate program.
The Department of City and Regional Planning has entered into submatriculation
agreements with Penn's undergraduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences
and the Wharton School and the Growth and Structure of Cities program at Bryn
Mawr and Haverford Colleges that allow students demonstrating unusual promise
and academic strength to complete their Master of City Planning degree in
a shorter than usual time. In consultation with their undergraduate major
advisor and the Chair of the Department of City and Regional Planning they
may apply for admission into the BA/MCP program at the end of their sophomore
or in their junior years. If admitted, they may earn up to nine credits (or
one year advanced standing) toward the Master of City Planning degree. They
must also fulfill other MCP degree requirements including the pre-matriculation
summer program and an internship. They will fulfill all requirements for their
BA degrees before formally matriculating in the MCP program. top
Dual
Degree/Degree Plus Certificate Programs
Applicants pursuing a dual degree or a degree plus certificate
in the School of Design need only submit one application,
fee, and set of supporting materials. Because the on-line
application does not allow applicants to indicate that they
wish to be considered for more than one program, applicants
interested in this option should apply to one, then send
us a letter or e-mail asking to be considered for the second.
Applications for dual degree programs involving other schools
of the University will require independent application to
each degree. For a list of our dual degrees, go to: www.design.upenn.edu/new/dualdeg/dual.htm
