PENNDESIGN NOW REALLY ONLINE

Beginning this month we are sending PennDesign Online in HTML. We hope you'll find the new format user-friendly! This is our first issue, so there may be glitches. Please direct feedback to the PennDesign Alumni Office. As in the past, the current and archived issues will be posted on the PennDesign alumni website. Please submit alumni news items by the 15th of the month prior to publication (September - June).

 
CHUCK CLOSE TO SPEAK AT PENN - APRIL 7
American photorealist painter Chuck Close has been named the 2005 Locks Foundation Distinguished Artist and will present a slide lecture at the Annenberg Center's Zellerbach Theater on Thursday, April 7 at 6pm as part of the Locks Foundation Distinguished Artist Program. The event is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. To reserve tickets, visit the Annenberg Center website.

Former Penn president Judith Rodin will give a talk on West Philadelphia's revitalization at APA on Sunday, March 20, 8:30-10:15 am.

GAMBLING IN PHILADELPHIA
Last month's gambling charrette organized by Harris Steinberg C'78 MArch'82, executive director of PennPraxis, was a huge win for the School. At left is "Centrifuge," the winning design proposal for the Market Street site. See the Philadelphia Daily News for more coverage (registration required).

Are you looking to get hired? Employers regularly contact Career Services with job opportunities for new and experienced alumni. You can find them online by registering with PennLink. To get the word out about jobs, Career Services is creating an email listserv specifically for PennDesign alumni. Sign up online to receive email notices about design-related job openings.

received a PhD in regional planning at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 2004. His thesis was titled, "An Assessment of Discommodity Effects of Swine Operations on Rural Property Values: A Spatial Analysis." He has returned to Korea and is currently working for Korea Land Corporation.

announces that his firm, Willowbank Garden Company, has won the design commission for the new Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield world headquarters to be located in Louisville, KY. Willowbank Garden is a design/build company specializing in ecological landscape architectural planning and installation projects.

James Corner MLA'86 CRT'86
chair of PennDesign's department of landscape architecture, and his firm, Field Operations, New York, are represented in the exhibition "Groundswell: Constructing The Contemporary Landscape" at MoMA's newly renovated midtown Manhattan location. Curated by PennDesign Overseer Peter Reed MA'83 PhD'89, Groundswell also features work by PennDesign faculty Peter Latz and Marion Weiss. Corner was recently nominated by Wired magazine for a "Rave award" in the architecture category for his firm's High Line project in Manhattan.

has been a practicing architect since 1971; he served as a US Peace Corps architect in Tunisia and taught at Iowa State, University of Oklahoma and Texas A&M for over 20 years. He is now in private practice in Woodstock, NY and notes that "it's good to connect with Penn alumni after all these years!"
