REMEMBERING C. BRITTON HARRIS, FAICP (1914-2005)

Dean Gary Hack and the city and regional planning department mourn the loss of emeritus professor Britton Harris, who died in February at the age of 90. The Penn planning community will celebrate his life and contributions to the field with a memorial service on Saturday, April 9 at 4pm in the Upper Gallery, Meyerson Hall. BECKY YOUNG: A BODY OF LIGHT

To celebrate the inspirational vision of professor Becky Young, who retires this spring after thirty years of teaching at Penn, PennDesign presents BECKY YOUNG: A BODY OF LIGHT 1961-2005, a retrospective exhibition of her work exploring the female form as embodiment of evolution. Featuring photographs, paintings, collages and objects made and collected by the artist, the exhibit sheds light on her investigations into the tangible, symbolic, corporeal and spiritual, marking her instrumental role in shaping Penn's photography program. Chuck Close will deliver the third annual Locks Foundation Distinguished Artist Lecture to a sold-out crowd at the Annenberg Center on Thursday, April 7. Moshe Safdie will give the 2005 Louis I. Kahn Memorial Lecture at the University Museum on Wed, April 13. Sponsored by the AIA Center for Architecture, tickets may be purchased online.

Robert Bole MCP'93 was recently made a vice president of the One Economy Corporation, a national nonprofit organization that utilizes technology in the home to help low-income families move up and out of poverty.  Rob and his wife Mary Vasse MRP'93, the northwest director for the National Forest Foundation, live and work in Portland, OR with their three-year old son Sam.

is organizing the Living Like Leonardo Venetian Festival at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto on April 15; the program will showcase the history and models of the Leonardo da Vinci-inspired Ornithopter.

reports that Jonathan Mandell Mosaics
is featured in the exhibit "Art of the Game: The Art of Baseball" at the George Krevsky Gallery, 77 Geary Boulevard, San Francisco, CA through the month of April. The gallery is open from 11 am - 5:30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

Steven J. Young MLA'94
reports that his wife Gabrielle has Lupus and is in need of a kidney transplant. He has set up a website to keep everyone informed about
her progress and to let friends and family know how they can help.

Lori Schuldiner Schor MCP'84
is development director of Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union. She lives in Millburn, NJ with her husband, Joshua, medical director of Daughters of Israel Geriatric Center, and their three daughters ages 15, 12 and 10.

principal of Scott Simons Architects, Portland, ME, reports that his firm has been selected to design two twelve-story apartment buildings on a hillside overlooking the City of Portland and Casco Bay.

Chris Barton MLA'76
has joined Kimley-Horn and Associates' design office in Fort Lauderdale, FL as the senior planner and landscape architect. He previously served as the principal planner of the City of Fort Lauderdale, overseeing the city's dynamic growth over an 11-year period.


George Dugan BFA'70 MFA'71
recently had a solo exhibition in Saratoga, FL of oil paintings done in Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland. Represented by Chilldon and Chilldon Fine Arts, Saratoga, FL, Dugan is director of art study in Ireland through SUNY's International Study Abroad Program and has traveled to Ireland the past four summers. He has been appointed to the board of the Center for the Arts, Homer, NY; the board has purchased a church to serve as an arts center that will offer art, dance and music classes, theater productions and an artist in residence program.

Dr. Joan Hock Steyaert PhD'73
retired from the federal
government in May 2002. She spent more than 20 years working in the senior executive service as director of regional environmental programs, Department of Energy; center director, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; director of state programs, FEMA, chief information officer, US Trade Representative, and assistant administrator, General Services Administration. She is now focusing on painting and jazz piano and invites her classmates to contact her.

Clyde Reynolds Carpenter MArch'62
is chair of historic preservation, Clay Lancaster professor of historic preservation and professor of architecture at the University of Kentucky College of Design, where he served as associate dean (1974-2003) and acting dean (1990-1992). He has received the Public Service to Preservation Award of the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation and the Historic Preservation Award of the Lexington-Fayette County Historic Preservation Commission. He has also served several terms on Lexington’s Board of Architectural Review. The annual Clyde Carpenter Award for Adaptive Reuse has been established by the Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation and was presented for the first time last June to recognize the adaptive reuse of an historic commercial building, now a restaurant, in Lexington. His own house, an adaptively reused stable and carriage house, has been published and was featured on the HGTV program, Extreme Homes.
