FINE ARTS NEWS

With sadness we report that NEIL WELLIVER (1929-2005), chair of Penn's fine arts department from 1966 until 1990, died on April 5. A memorial service will be held on July 22 in Belfast, ME.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Landscape architecture chair JAMES CORNER and his firm, Field Operations, are featured in The High Line exhibit at MoMA through July 18. At right is the Field Operations/Diller Scofidio + Renfro proposal for Manhattan's High Line.

ANITA BERRIZBEITIA, associate professor of landscape architecture, is the recipient of the 2005 Prince Charitable Trusts Rome Prize Fellowship; she will be on sabbatical next year to study "The Ecology of Formal Systems in the Italian Landscape and Garden."

Joseph Erb MFA'02
has completed the film Messenger as part of his effort to preserve the Cherokee language through animation. His film The Beginning They Told can be seen at the Smithsonian National Museum of the Native American Indian in New York.
 

1990s
Urshula Barbour MFA'94
reports that her studio, Pure+Applied, designed
The Green House: New Directions in Sustainable Architecture (Princeton Architectural Press, 2005). Their exhibition "Big&Green" at the National Building Museum received a merit award from the Society of Environmental Graphic Design. Pure+Applied is working on a book on architecture for humanity co-published by Metropolis Books and DAP, and a catalogue on the work of Aernout Mik for the New Museum of Contemporary Art.

Emmanuelle Chammah-Slossberg MArch'97
is an account director at the New York ad agency The 7th Art. She has received her LEED certification and is working on the Bank of America Tower (world's most sustainable skyscraper- LEED Platinum) designed by Cook+Fox. She has seen several classmates recently: Pars Moghbel works with Adam Weinstein; Jeff Young is at SOM; Amy Lopez-Cepero is practicing in NYC; and Charles Norman works for Millenium Partners.


J. Christopher Frey MS'97
has formed Keystone Preservation Group, a specialized consulting firm in Doylestown, PA that focuses on all aspects of historic preservation, including architectural conservation, materials analysis, construction administration and documentary research.

Daniel Heyman MFA'91

has been awarded the National Endowment for the Arts Rome Prize Fellowship to study US and Italian heritage-site management.

Jean Kessler Wolf MS'93
has been named executive director of The Woodlands, an 18th-century mansion and 19th-century rural cemetery in Philadelphia.

works for Jensen + Partners, Los Angeles, a 10-person project development/project management consulting firm serving healthcare,
cultural and scientific research institutions whose resume includes projects by IM Pei, Kohn Pederson Fox, Perkins + Will. The firm is seeking a recent architecture or planning grad with 2 years technical/management experience for an architectural manager position.

has been named practice leader for regional growth management at PB PlaceMaking, a subsidiary of Parsons Brinckerhoff that assists in the development of sustainable communities; he is based in the Baltimore office.

Zenos Frudakis BFA'72 MFA'73
reports that his life-size bronze sculpture of former ClubCorp president Robert Dedman was dedicated at Pinehurst Resort, NC, on April 18. Current work in progress includes The Honor Guard sculpture for the US Air Force Memorial, scheduled for dedication in 2006 at Arlington National Cemetery.


Michael Harrison MArch'79 MCP'79 CRT'80
would be happy to meet PennDesign/GSFA graduates traveling to Sydney, Australia. Michael is a director of Architectus Sydney, where his work has included the Central Sydney Plan. Recently he traveled to
Japan and met up with Satoru Kiasawa, Tadao Kamei and Keiko Matsumoto. Satoru has taken over his father's role as Buddhist priest in a 350-year-old temple between Kyoto and Osaka; he is the 17th generation of his family to run the temple and during the week he also works as an architect. Tadao is principal design architect at Nikken Sekkei.

reports that her recent paintings can be seen at Lori Bookstein Fine Art, 37 West 57th Street, New York and, this summer, on Martha's Vineyard at Etherington Fine Art, where a show of her work opens August 11.

Jo Margolis BFA'72 MFA'76
has won first place in the Lebanon Valley College 34th Annual Juried Art Exhibition, in which three of her works are exhibited.

and his wife, Dr. H. Jiuan Heng are happy to announce the birth of their second child, daughter Amy, in Singapore. Stephen is the senior director of the M. Moser Group for regional business development.

received the 2003 UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award of Excellence for the conservation of the Fort of Nagaur in Rajasthan, India and would be interested in collaborating with fellow alums on conservation projects in India.


Valerie Seligsohn MFA'66
announces that her exhibition, Vessel of Life, opens at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum, Ormond Beach, FL, on May 13; she will give a slide lecture on May 14. Valerie serves as PDAA regional director for Florida along with David Feinberg BArch'61.
