DAVID HOLLENBERG NAMED UNIVERSITY ARCHITECT

Penn has appointed David Hollenberg MArch'75 to succeed Charlie Newman MArch'75 WG'81 as the University Architect. "With a wealth of experience in managing major building projects and his enthusiasm for historical preservation, David Hollenberg is the ideal architect for Penn," Penn executive vice president Craig Carnaroli said. "The University seeks to retain the historic character of our older buildings while bringing them into the 21st century and to build new facilities that blend into our mature campus. David's vision and expertise will be invaluable to us as we move forward with this challenging and critical goal." RAYMOND EXHIBITION OPENS AT PENN

Crafting a Modern World: The Architecture and Design of Antonin and Noemi Raymond debuts in the Meyerson Hall Galleries from June 29 - September 24, 2006 before traveling to California and Japan. All alumni are welcome at the opening reception on Wednesday, June 28, 5:30-7:30pm. RSVP to nthorne@design.upenn.edu

This first-ever retrospective exhibit of work by one of the most influential architecture and design teams of the modern age includes some 200 drawings, models, photographs, videos, furniture and other objects which trace the Raymonds’ extraordinary 40-year encounter with Japanese culture and the years they spent living and working in the Northeastern US from their earliest commissions to major projects, including their 1933 summer studio in Karuizawa, pictured at right.

is an urban designer with Orange County Planning Division, Orlando, FL, and recently joined the ranks of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). She reports that many communities in Florida are in desperate need of city planners due to population growth; please email her if you are interested in job opportunities.

will have a a solo show of digital prints at VIAP Galerie in Holland from July 2 - August 13.

Jenna Solomon MS'05
competed on the game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" on May 25. She is an historic preservation planner for Anne Arundel County, MD.

1990s

Zoee Astrachan C’90 MLA’93 and Andrew Dunbar MArch’94
are pleased to announce that their firm, INTERSTICE Architects, San Francisco, CA, received a 2006 merit award from the Northern California Chapter of ASLA for their master plan for Confluence Park, Pleasanton, CA. Dunbar was a member of the design team for the Scrap House that received a 2006 San Francisco AIA achievement award for sustainable design.

reports the publication of his book, Drosscape: Wasting Land in Urban America (Princeton Architectural Press, 2006).

1980s

David Gleeson MCP'88 CRT'88
sadly mourns the death of his nine-year-old daughter Paige Gleeson, who passed away on April 20, 2006 after a sudden and rapid illness. Paige is survived by David, mother Lynn Kanda and sister Paiton.
Ed Hollander MLA'83
reports that his firm, Edmund Hollander Design PC, received the 2006 award of honor in residential design from the American Society of Landscape Architects for a project they recently completed in East Hampton, NY.
Arun Jain MArch'86 MCP'86
is in his third year as Portland, OR's first chief urban designer. An interview with him was recently published in Den Haag 1908-2030, the city's third spatial atlas. He continues to lead Portland's urban design efforts having developed comprehensive urban design visions for a range of new developments and civic improvements including an upgrade of the city's transit mall and urban design frameworks for the Pearl and South Waterfront developments. He is also on the innovation and editorial boards of an EU funded project (MILUnet) overseeing the work of 12 countries on mixed-use and high density developments.

Niall G. Kirkwood MLA'85
chair, program director and professor, department of landscape architecture, Harvard Design School, was a special guest of Mexican president Vincente Fox at the May 17 inauguration of Parque Lago, the cleanup and regeneration of the Pemex Refinery Site, Mexico CIty. He was also the moderator of "Reclaiming the Land: Conversations on Collaboration" at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at the New School, New York, NY, on May 24 as part of the "Forgiveness Cycle." Panelists included Chris Reed MLA’95.

Vibeke Lichten MArch'80
has relocated from Philadelphia to New York where she divides her time among her architecture and design firm, L’atelier Vibeke Lichten, designing a 400 unit condominium project along the Delaware River in Philadelphia and the A2 Investments Group real estate company, where she is involved as a partner in the development of a condo building in Tribeca scheduled for completion in March 2007; she also teaches design at Pratt. She has been accepted to the 2006-2008 advanced management development program in real estate at Harvard's GSD. www.vibekelichten.com

Michael McDonough MArch'83
will be featured on the upcoming PBS design series "e²: The Economies of Being Environmentally Conscious" hosted by Brad Pitt and scheduled to air in early Jun
e. He participated in the forum Design: Series on May 31 at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York, NY.  His experimental e-House project was featured in Wired magazine’s "Coolest Rooms on the Planet" article in January 2006 and included in Philip Jodidio’s international survey of advanced architecture, Architecture Now! 4 (Taschen). E-House will also be featured on the Discovery Channel’s “Beyond Tomorrow” later in the year. McDonough recently returned from Sydney, Australia where he was a keynote speaker for the international exhibition designEX 2006 and a featured speaker on the Australian Broadcast Company’s Radio National show “By Design” as part of the 2006 Royal Australian Institute of Architecture’s National Conference.

1970s

Jo Margolis BFA'72 MFA'76
received first prize in the 35th annual juried art exhibit at Lebanon Valley College, Annville, PA, on April 21, 2006, for the second year in a row. The juror this year was Madeleine Viljoen, PhD, director of the LaSalle University Art Museum.

J. Douglas Peix MArch'71 MCP'71 CRT'71
and his business partner, Steve Marchetti, are seeking a project architect with 3-4 years of experience in residential design. Peix & Marchetti Architects is a small 5-person firm, doing new houses, house additions and transformations, apartment renovations, apartment linkings, penthouse additions and some commercial projects.  Check out their website, www.peixandmarchetti.com, for a clearer picture of some of their accomplishments.

Diane Burko MFA'69
has a solo exhibition of photographs at the Locks Gallery, Philadelphia, from June 2-30, marking the first time the gallery is exhibiting a total body of photographic work by her. The inkjet prints taken with various cameras - SLR, medium format and most recently, a Canon EOS D20 - are editioned, printed by Silicon on acid free 100% rag Lyson paper and digitally adjusted with Photoshop. Flow, an exhibition of 26 pieces by her, will be on view at the Michener Art Museum from June 10 - October 15. Curated by guest curator Amy Ingrid Schlegel, it is the fourth in an ongoing series at the Michener featuring contemporary landscape painters. Nic Coviello BFA'69 MFA'72
has work featured in the group exhibition Black & White at Projects Gallery, Philadelphia, through June 25.
Glen Gallagher MArch'62
was awarded an honorary doctorate (PhD Honoris Causa) by the University of Pretoria for his contributions to architecture and urban design in South Africa. He recently retired as a founding director of GAPP Architects & Urban Designers, which has won many awards for completed buildings. Many years ago, he was awarded the SA Institute of Architects Silver Medal of Excellence.
Michael Guran MArch'62
reports that as design principal at Moshe Safdie and Associates he is involved with several projects under construction: Federal Courthouse, Springfield, MA, which will have a 200-foot-long mural by Sol Lewitt; Toronto Airport Hammerhead F, in collaboration with SOM New York, which has a Richard Serra sculpture; and the West Edge project, Kansas City, which will contain office, hotel and museum space. In design is a major expansion of the National Gallery of Canada and Rochester's Renaissance Square, a transportation, college and theater complex.
Bill Sullivan MFA'68
has a retrospective exhibition of landscape paintings from the past 38 years at the Albany Institute of History and Art from June 22 - August 15. The exhibition is in conjunction with a book by Jaime Manrique with an introduction by John Ashbery and 50 color reproductions. Check out www.billsullivanpaintings.com for more.
1950s
Hugh Miller BArch'55
received an allied profession award from the Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects at their spring conference on April 21, 2006 in recognition of his continuing programs and projects for the preservation of historic landscapes and his contributions to the profession as chief historical architect, National Park Service (1979-1988), director of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (1989-1994) and professor of historic preservation, Goucher College (1995-present).
