CALL FOR ARTISTS
Submit artwork related to "the power of water" to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina!

KB Basseches MFA'88, a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University, is curating the exhibition "...and the levee broke: meditations on the power of water" which will be on view in Richmond from December 1 through January 3 and will travel to at least four other venues in 2006.

Artwork must be 12"w x 18"h or smaller; prices will be $500 or less; proceeds will be directed to the National Art Education Association Katrina Fund. The submissions deadline is November 14. Download the entry form.

has a solo show "Vocabulary" at St. Joseph's University Gallery, Philadelphia from November 7 - December 12.
Sarah Gray MS'00
has been appointed to the Toronto Preservation Board, which advises City Council on heritage designation and other preservation issues.
Lynn Mandarano PhD'04
joined the Temple University faculty this fall as an assistant professor of community and regional planning. Check out the press release on the Temple website for more on her appointment and her thoughts on environmental planning.

Aaron Brooks MFA'96
has a solo show "Time and Other Uncertainties" at the Bowery Gallery, New York through November 26.
Saeri Kiritani MFA'97
has two video/film works and a performance piece in the exhibition "Re-Generation" at the Mabel Smith Douglass Library, New Brunswick, NJ through January 15.
Anu Mathur MLA'93
associate professor of landscape architecture and lecturer Dilip da Cunha are pleased to announce that their exhibition "Deccan Traverses: From 'Naked Country' to 'Garden City'" is on view at the University of Virginia through November 23, and will be featured in the exhibition "10 Lines" at the Harvard Design School in December. Their book Deccan Traverses: The Making of Bangalore's Terrain will be published by Rupa & Co, Delhi in December.

has a solo exhibition "Ebb& Flow" at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Philadelphia from November 2 - 26.
Robert Saarnio MS'94
has created a blog for friends and family to follow his year as a fellow at the American Academy in Rome.

Mary (Mania) Dajnak MFA'89
exhibited works on paper and a collaborative installation with weaver Mai Curtis and ceramicist Mary Weis at the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery, Toledo, OH in October. Her artwork can be viewed on the HarrowGate Press website.
Patricia Kucker MArch'83
has been appointed graduate program director at the University of Cincinnati School of Architecture and Interior Design. She will also serve as the program coordinator for the Master of Architecture degree program. She previously served as the architecture department head at the University of Arkansas and was a faculty member at the University of Virginia.
Sarah McCoubrey C'79 MFA'81
has a solo exhibition "Signs of Life" at the Locks Gallery, Philadelphia from November 4 - December 17. Featuring twenty paintings and drawings of landscapes in rural New York and Ireland, it is her third exhibition at the Locks Gallery.
Conor Skehan MLA'84
has been appointed head of the department of environment and planning in the Dublin Institute of Technology's School of Spatial Planning. He retains his roles as managing director of a number of environmental and planning consultancy firms in Dublin, and is also an advisor to the UN on governmental renewal in Iraq.
1970s
David Chamberlain MFA'77
has been teaching design at Clemson University this past year.  He will present "An Artistic Soiree: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Art but were Afraid to Ask" to the Penn Club of Charlotte (NC) on November 12, and he will present a similar program in Charlottesville, VA on November 4. A practicing artist with over 200 works in the collections of art museums and institutions worldwide, he invites alumni to attend these events and to visit his studio website.
Philip A. Esocoff C'71 MArch'74
reports that his firm Esocoff & Associates | Architects received a 2005 Mayor's award for design excellence in historic preservation for its recently completed mixed-use project, The Jefferson at Penn Quarter, in Washington, DC.
Elissa Gore CW'73 MFA'74
reports that her painting
"Hayfield, Cunningham Road" was selected by Windham Fine Arts, Windham, NY as the painting of the month in October.
Eleanor Hubbard CW'67 MFA'71
and her husband, Geoffrey White MArch'71, hosted a scholarship event for Penn alumni at their Martha's Vineyard home in August. Roy Vagelos C'50 HON'99, retired chairman of Merck & Co, spoke with first-hand eloquence about the importance of supporting Penn's scholarship tradition at the gathering, which began with a champagne reception at the opening of Hubbard's exhibit, "Seeing Things" at the Etherington Gallery in Vineyard Haven.
Terry Jacobs MArch'75
principal, Jacobs/Wyper Architects, co-edited the book Good Design Practices for GMP Pharmaceutical Facilities for professionals involved in the planning, construction, validation and maintenance of pharmaceutical facilities.
Peter Lizon PhD'71
is professor emeritus at the University of Tennessee and a visiting professor at Slovak Technical University, Bratislava (FA STU). He has started a distance learning pilot program with the EU Socrates-Erasmus exchange, which attracts students from France, Spain, Germany and the Czech Republic. After an intensive workshop in Bratislava, design crits, consultations, seminar lectures and presentations are conducted via video conferencing betwen the US and Slovakia.
Martha Thorne MCP'75
has been appointed executive director of the Pritzker Architecture Prize by the Hyatt Foundation, Chicago, IL.

Richard Bartholomew C'63 MArch'65
principal of WRT and current director of their Philadelphia office reports that WRT has won the leadership in sustainability award given by the Pennsylvania Resources Council. The award will be presented on November 17.

Natvar Bhavsar MFA'65
has a solo show "New Paintings from New York" at the Mira Godard Gallery, Toronto, ON through November 5.
Leslie Gallery Dilworth CW'64 MFA'68 MArch'71
reports that her Galisteo, NM home will be featured in the book 25 Houses under 3000 sq ft, coming out in December as part of a series by James Trulove. She is executive director of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design, which just completed a study for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on communicating to non-English speakers in healthcare environments.
Scott Killinger MArch'66 MCP'66 CRT'66
is a consulting partner at KSK, Philadelphia and a partner at Kuang Xing, a Beijing-based planning, urban design, landscape and architecture firm that opened three years ago after winning a competition for a waterfront redevelopment project in TianJin.

Richard Saul Wurman BArch'58 MArch'59
invites alumni to visit the website for eg2006, an entertainment gathering created and produced by him. Featuring presentations by Frank Gehry, Richard Meier, Moshe Safdie, Yo-Yo Ma and Quincy Jones, among others, the event will take place February 1-3, 2006 at the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles.
