CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2007!

Noted environmentalist David Orr gave a rousing commencement address and PDAA board member Lisa Kolakowsky Smith MS'97 conferred alumni status on the class of 2007 at PennDesign's graduation last month. Join us in welcoming the new graduates to the PennDesign Alumni Association, and register for the Penn Alumni Career Network (PACNet) to mentor them and current students!

Schuylkill River Guided Boat Tour, Philadelphia, PA
Thursday, June 14, 7-8pm
Catch the inside scoop on development by Penn and the city along the Schuylkill on this special "Penn" boat tour led by Joseph Syrnick, Chairman and CEO, Schuylkill River Development Corp. and Mark Kocent C'82 MCP'91 CRT'91, Principal Planner, Penn's Office of the University Architect.

MOSLEY TO SHOW AT VENICE BIENNALE
Mosley image Joshua Mosley, associate professor of fine arts, animation and digital media at PennDesign and currently a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, will exhibit his new work "dread" at the Venice Biennale's 52nd International Art Exhibition, June 10-November 21. His work will be installed in two rooms of the Italian Pavilion: one room dedicated to his sculptures and the other dedicated to his animation, for which he also composed the music. This is the first time a Penn fine arts faculty member has participated in the Biennale.

was awarded the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship to study in the Netherlands for the 2007-2008 academic year.

showed his work at The White Dog Cafe in Philadelphia last month. Raising Micropower Radio, a series of photographs and lightbox installation, features the West Philadelphia-based Prometheus Radio Project. Pictured at left is an image from Tiziou's trip to Kenya, where Prometheus built several low-power radio stations. www.jjtiziou.net

Kristine Kowalczyk D'Elisa MArch'96 CRT'96
was promoted to Partner at R.S. Granoff Architects, P.C.  She designs high-end homes in and around Greenwich, CT, focusing her efforts on environmentally sustainable design and construction.  R.S. Granoff Architects is a full-service architecture, planning and interior design firm with offices in Greenwich and Southampton, NY.

Rachel Levitt MArch'99
is the Home Design Editor for Boston Magazine, and the editor of Boston Magazine's Home & Garden, a quarterly glossy dedicated to architecture and interiors. Levitt found as a practicing architect that the writing and selected projects in the shelter magazines often lacked depth. It is her hope that as an editor she can raise the standard for the lay press - get great projects published, and cover them with intelligence and wit. PennDesign alumni are welcome to contact her with queries and projects!

Sachimine Masui MLA'97
announces his new book on Japanese gardens, written in collaboration with Italian garden architect, Beatrice Testini. The book, published in Italian by CasadeiLibri, is titled: San Sen Sou Moku, il giardino giapponese nella tradizione e nel mondo contemporaneo (San Sen Sou Moku, the Japanese garden in the traditional and contemporary world). The book examines some of the essential characteristics of the Japanese gardens, notably their active relationships with the landscape, Great Nature and the Universe, as well as other traditional Japanese arts such as poetry, calligraphy, tea ceremony and chivalrous arts. The book also includes translations of eleven texts written by important garden designers from the 14th century to the present.

1980s

Arthur Bruso MFA'83
has an exhibition of his work on view at Curious Matter in Jersey City, NJ through June 30. Into the Magic Space features reprints and reexamined works juxtaposed to explore anomalies inspired by nontraditional use of photography. The gallery is located at 272 Fifth Street and is open Sundays 12-3pm and by appointment, 201-659-5771.

1970s

James Higgins C'76 MArch'78 WG'87
has formed Solebury Research LLC, an independent equity research firm concentrating on the airline industry. He is affiliated with New York-based broker-dealer Soleil Securities and lives in Solebury, Bucks County, PA and New York City.

John "Skip" McKoy MCP'70
joined Fight For Children (FFC) this May as Director, Programmatic Initiatives. McKoy, who brings a strong background in urban planning and community development, will oversee a host of education and health care initiatives planned by FFC as part of a bold new agenda designed to improve the quality of life for children and youth in Washington, DC. FFC is a non-profit organization committed to helping the most underserved children in our nation’s capital.

Clark Manus MArch'78
was elected to serve a 2-year term as vice president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), beginning this December. He is the CEO and design principal of Heller Manus Architects in San Francisco. The firm’s special talent is a synthesis of strong design and political savvy to facilitate public approval of complex and controversial projects. Manus, a senior AIA Board director from California and AIA Fellow, is active in advocacy and community design issues nationally and locally.

1960s
Peter Piven MArch'63
Philadelphia-based principal consultant of The Coxe Group, Inc., presented a workshop on Developing Leaders and Leadership and moderated a panel discussion on Starting a Design Firm at the AIA Convention in San Antonio this May. He also welcomed Penn graduates and recognized those who were elevated to AIA Fellowship at the PennDesign alumni reception during the convention.

Idaherma Williams MFA'63
will show her woodblock series The Twelve Labors of Hercules at Erdman Gallery at Princeton Theological Seminary through July 13.

1950s

Cherry Blossoms

Douglas Simms Stenhouse MArch'57
has been pursuing a longtime interest in painting watercolors since retiring from the profession of architecture a decade or so ago. Cherry Blossoms is pictured at left; see his website for further examples of his work and information on his career. His solo exhibition, 56+ Years of Painting & Still Goin' Strong, will be on view June 10-July 4 at the Burrison Gallery of the University Club on Penn's campus; opening reception is Sunday, June 10, 3-5PM.
