GROWING GREENER CITIES SYMPOSIUM: October 15-17 |
Dr. Wangari Maathai, 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of Kenya's Green Belt movement, will give the keynote speech for Growing Greener Cities: Symposium on Urban Environmental Issues in the 21st Century on Monday, October 16, 7pm at Irvine Auditorium. Dr. Maathai is the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Her lecture, "Sustainable Development, Democracy and Peace: A Critical Link," is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required; seating is first come, first served. |

On Thursday, October 26 at 6pm, the PennDesign Real Estate Club will host a career panel featuring three distinguished alumni: Micki Stolker MCP'82 of Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors, Michael Saltzman MArch'96 MRP'97 of Newwork, and Robert Henderson MArch'73 MCP'73 CRT'73 of the Keating Group. Panelists will trace their rich career paths and reflect on how their PennDesign education contributed to their current success. The Real Estate Club invites alumni working or interested in the real estate industry to become more involved with the club's alumni program. This program aims to 1) maintain school ties and establish business networks among PennDesign alumni in the real estate industry, and 2) provide alumni support to current club members. | Ron Henderson MArch'95 MLA'95 is visiting associate professor of landscape architecture at Tsinghua University in Beijing, where he joins PennDesign practice professor Laurie Olin as part of the inaugural faculty for the newly established department of landscape architecture at the university. L + A Landscape Architecture, Henderson's professional studio in Providence, recently received three awards from ASLA - Rhode Island. The Fuzhou University Landscape Master Plan in China, the XiHaizhi Model Ecological Park in Beijing and the Arboreal Infrastructure policy initiative received Honor Awards in Design, Planning and Policy respectively. |
| Tom Jester MS'91 project manager at Quinn Evans Architects, is currently working on a Facility Master Plan for the AIA Headquarters in Washington, DC. The study will focus on space use strategies, office environment upgrades, best practices for rehabilitating modern-era buildings, and sustainable design improvements. He is also working on a new 40,000 SF library in Easton, MD. |
| Marc Roder MFA'90 currently has a one man show at the Dorsch Gallery in Miami. The Dorsch was recently named Best Art Gallery by the Miami New Times. See also Marc's website for more info. |
| Catherine Wiley MLA'98 assistant professor of landscape architecture at North Dakota State University, teaches design studios, directs the landscape program service learning initiatives and oversees the department's summer foreign travel program. Since joining NDSU, she won a grant for developing nature- and cultural-based tourism initiatives throughout the state and has been appointed to the Fargo Planning Commission. |

| Peter Doo MArch'80 architect and principal with Baltimore-based Hord Coplan Macht, has been elected to chair the Northeast Corridor Regional Council of the U.S. Green Building Council. He will serve a one-year term, leading efforts to encourage green building practices throughout the region, which has a total of nine member organizations. |

| Rita Bernstein MFA'76 owner and designer of RitaSilk Designs, has a one woman show at the Tucson Jewish Community Center in Tucson, AZ. "A Silk Celebration of Life's Passages" is on exhibit through October 15. |
| Elissa Gore CW'73 MFA'74 will show her work at Howard Gallery of Fine Art in New Hope, PA, October 7-31; reception will be held on October 14. Gore paints large, atmospheric landscapes: meditations on harmony in nature. She looks for places where the balance of natural elements: sky, earth, trees and water, evoke a sense of "stopped time." |
| Michael Murphy MArch'76 and Frank Dittenhafer II MArch'82 are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their firm, Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects. The firm has grown to a staff of 26 in two offices: York, PA and Baltimore, MD, and has received over 70 awards for architectural design excellence, historic preservation and craftsmanship, most recently for the Tremont Grand and Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore, Osborun Hall at Millersville University in PA, Immaculate Conception Church in Towson, MD and the West Manchester Township Building in York County, PA. |
| Stephen Tsou C'75 MArch'77 will be a director for Adamson Associates International for their New York City branch. He leaves M. Moser Associates in Singapore and returns to New York City with his family in November 2006. |

| Jack Diamond MArch'62 designed the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, which opened this summer to rave reviews. The Centre is home to the Canadian Opera Company and the performance venue of the National Ballet of Canada. |
