DIVERSITY CONFERENCE & STUDENT AWARDS

The PennDesign Black Student Alliance (BSA) has organized the diversity conference, Unspoken Borders: Perspectives on Race + Design, to be held March 30-31 at Penn. Keynote speakers include Walter Hood and Mitchell Silver. Student Co-Chairs of the BSA, Sherry Taylor MCP'07 and LaToya Nelson MArch'08, are also recent recipients of Penn's 2007 Women of Color Day Awards.

Daniel Dalseth MFA'02
is director of Pageant Soloveev Gallery in Center City, Philadelphia. The Gallery will exhibit paintings and works on paper of Sarah Gamble MFA'01 (untitled, at right) in All Alone in the Electromagnetic Sphere March 2-April 8; opening reception is Saturday, March 3 at 7pm.

Rebecca Rutstein MFA'97
has a solo exhibition of paintings entitled [de]formation at Bridgette Mayer Gallery in the gallery's New Hope, PA location, March 2-25; second Saturday reception is March 10, 6-9pm. She is also exhibiting in a group show entitled Finish/Line at the Borowsky Gallery at the Gershman Y through April 13.

1980s

David Hinson MArch'83
associate professor and interim head of the School of Architecture at Auburn University, has received an ACSA Collaborative Practice Award for the DESIGNhabitat 2 Studio, a design/build studio he led with colleague Stacy Norman in 2006. The DESIGNhabitat 2 House, designed and built by Hinson's team of 3rd and 4th year design students, received a 2006 AIA Alabama Design Honor Award and a 2007 AIA Housing Design Award.

has an installation at the Philadelphia Airport, Terminal A-West, through July.

1970s

Nina Brown MLA'75
and her partner Alison Richardson of Brown, Richardson & Rowe, Inc. recently won the Providence Waterfront Competition in Providence, RI. The waterfront parks will be built on land reclaimed by the planned relocation of the Interstate 195 overpass. That portion of the highway currently winds through Providence, splintering neighborhoods while creating dangerous traffic conditions. The BR&R-designed parks will flank either side of the Providence River once the highway has been moved.

Shirley Chang MArch'77
principal of Chang Bene Design, Hong Kong/New York City, announced the firm's presence in Shanghai with the design of two historical houses in the French Concession district. The project was published in the February 2007 issue of Architectural Digest, and received a Business Week/Architectural Record China award in the historic preservation category.

is an architect and planner living in New Jersey. His recent oil painting, Central Park South, is pictured at left.
1960s
Natvar Bhavsar MFA'65
will be featured in an exhibition of nearly 50 of his paintings at the Voorhees Special Exhibition Galleries at the Zimmerli Art Museum of Rutgers University. The Dimensions of Color will run March 11-July 22; opening reception is March 10, 7-9pm.
1950s

Gene Kohn BArch'53 MArch'57
founding partner of Kohn Pederson Fox Architects, reports that his firm celebrated its 30th anniversary last year with, among other celebrations, a reception in December at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong. KPF is planning additional Hong Kong events in conjunction with the AIA conference this April. Gene is teaching a course at the Harvard Business School: Design, Construction & Development Risk, and is possibly the first architect to teach at HBS.
