In June 2003, the Graduate School of Fine Arts became the University of Pennsylvania School of Design . This new name better reflects what
we are about and the diversity of our programs Fine Arts, city planning, landscape Fine Arts, historic preservation, fine arts, digital media design, and visual studies. With the change of the name of our school, we have signaled the importance of creativity in all aspects of our environment. We use ³design² in the broad sense to include both creating stimulating objects and places, and influencing the social and
political processes that have a bearing on the built and natural world.
The School of Design is establishing Penn as a leading center for design
education and practice in the 21st century. It is a school for leaders
today and in the future.
Over the next few months, we will be giving ourselves a facelift. Please
refer to our website, www.design.upenn.edu , for further information
about the school.
