Hsu Named 2012-2013 Fulbright Nexus Scholar

WASHINGTON, DC-PennDesign is pleased to announce that David Hsu, Assistant Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, has been named as a 2012-2013 Fulbright Regional Network for Applied Research (NEXUS) Scholar by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Hsu, who studies ow environmental policy is implemented in cities through systems of infrastructure, buildings, institutions, behavior, and finance, will focus on "Data Infrastructure for Energy Efficiency in Buildings in Brazil and the U.S." as his project.

Through international exchanges, seminars, and collaborative research, Fulbright NEXUS participants will engage in collaborative thinking, analysis, and problem-solving on improving the quality of life for communities across the region dealing with environmental changes.

The Fulbright NEXUS Program allows scholars to spend up to one year researching strategies to aid communities faced with climate change. The scholars are experts in different fields and include scientists, economists, engineers, anthropologists, entrepreneurs, and development experts. Individually and in teams, scholars will explore public-policy research questions to effectively involve governments, NGOs, businesses, and communities. Participants are expected to develop and implement activities related to their research at the local, regional, and national levels.

Topics of particular interest for Hsu include energy and water, green buildings and building codes, consumer behavior, and how these are all affected by increasing amounts of data. Prior to academia, Professor Hsu worked in city government in Seattle and New York; as a financial analyst; and as a structural engineer and environmental designer. He received his doctorate from the University of Washington in Seattle, and was previously educated at Yale and Cornell Universities, and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
