Thursday, October 11 MOVIE MATTER 6:30PM, Meyerson Lower Gallery Co-Sponsor: DesignPhiladelphia
A Record or a Process? Why are designers not creating their own movies? Part presentation and part discussion, we will look at the experimental, speculative, and strange work of designers who manipulate the moving image process, and not simply as documentation. With Jinhee Park and John Hong of SsD, Mariana Ibañez and Simon Kim of IK studio, and AliciaImperiale of Tyler School of Art.
Works on view include a remarkable series of recent photographs by Betsy Manning as well as rare original drawings by figures such as Louis I. Kahn who contributed to this important and underappreciated architectural legacy.
Tricia Treacy and Ashley John Pigford created a Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) router to then create wood type of the digital font Vista Sans™ and sent it to 20 international designers/artists/printmakers/studios. Each participant was challenged to interpret these materials as an edition of prints. The exhibition includes all of the prints and video documentation of how the type was made.
Part art project, part utopian visionary action, The Vista Sans Wood Type Project is an unsinkable love affair with technology in service to art and art as a vehicle for the possibility of a collaborative community.
