Professor Dana Tomlin joined the Faculty in 1991 after having taught at the Ohio State University School of Natural Resources and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. A recipient of the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, he also serves as a member of the Faculty in City and Regional Planning and teaches as a visiting professor at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and the Conway School of Landscape Design. Tomlin's teaching and research focus on the development and application of geographic information systems (GIS). He is Founder and Co-Director of Penn's Cartographic Modeling Laboratory, author of Geographic Information Systems and Cartographic Modeling, and originator of the Map Algebra language embodied in most of today's raster-based geographic information systems.
