Philadelphia—LA+, the interdisciplinary journal of landscape architecture published by the University of Pennsylvania School of Design, announces the launch of an open design ideas competition for landscape architects, architects, planners, artists, and designers. The LA+ IMAGINATION design ideas competition asks entrants to design a new island. They can locate it anywhere in the world, program it any way they want, and give it any form and purpose they can imagine.
LA+ IMAGINATION’s Jury Chair, Richard Weller, said: “Islands hold an especially enigmatic place in our geographical imagination. Differentiated from their contexts and as much myth as reality, islands have their own rules, stories, characters, ecologies, functions, and forms. One thing is for sure: islands are good to think with. This competition is an opportunity for designers to push back against the tide of white noise and imagine alternative realities.”
The LA+ IMAGINATION competition is to be judged by an international interdisciplinary jury including landscape architect and designer of New York’s Highline James Corner, Founding Principal, James Corner Field Operations; award-winning architect Marion Weiss, FoundingPrincipal, WEISS/MANFREDI; urbanist Javier Arpa, Research and Education Coordinator, The WHY Factory, Delft University of Technology; design philosopher and Harper’s Magazine contributing editor Mark Kingwell; and Matthew Gandy, Cambridge University Professor of Urban and Cultural Geography. The jury is chaired by Richard Weller, LA+ Creative Director and Martin and Margy Meyerson Chair of Urbanism and Professor and Chair of Landscape Architecture at PennDesign.
A total of $10,000 USD and feature publication in LA+ Journal’s LA+ IMAGINATION issue is on offer. Select submissions will be chosen for exhibition in New York City in the spring of 2018. Submissions close on June 2, 2017. More details are available at the competition website, laplusjournal.com
