Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act is one of the foundational components of federal preservation law in the United States.  It requires federal agencies to "take into account" the effects of their projects on historic places. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is proposing dramatic changes to these regulations that, if enacted, would fundamentally change and limit the effectiveness of Section 106. Emerging preservation professionals should understand the proposed changes and the impacts they could have on preservation outcomes and the field.
