Increased Phishing Attempt Emails

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

We have received reports of an email phishing/scam campaign impersonating a professor, asking the recipient to purchase/send gift cards. Please see https://www.isc.upenn.edu/security/gift-card_scam for more information; in general, please be mindful of the following:

  •          Check the sender’s email address/reply-to address to make sure it matches a verified Penn e-mail, and be wary of any Gmail or other non-Penn accounts you receive messages from. Do this even if an e-mail seems to have the right signature or account picture.
  •          IT Services and all other departments at Penn will NEVER ask for your password. Do not respond or click any links asking for login credentials or any other important information such as Social Security Numbers, etc.
  •          Penn personnel will NOT ask for assistance in purchasing gift cards for personal purposes, and this is not how Penn does business.
  •          Reach out to IT Services at ithelp@design.upenn.edu and follow the steps at https://www.isc.upenn.edu/security/email-headers to provide us with the information we need to respond.
