Jessi Ali Lin

Lin’s practice exploits the notion of positionality—both in terms of physical position and the multivalence of identity— as central to her process. Drawing from feminist history, Minimalism and performance art, she examines her own positionality as a woman and her experience immigrating to the U.S., which requires code switching to perform in her new adopted systems. By obliquely referencing these personal experiences in precise and spare arrangement of techniques and materials, she points to the relationship between the performance of identity and its fragmented nature. She mainly works in performance, video, and sculpture. Video projections are often mapped out precisely to sculptural components of her work and vice versa. She also creates installation performances where she has performers activate spaces along with her sculptures.
