Areas
PennDesign’s David Gouverneur and the Gensler Fuel Lab collaborated together to imagine a city of the future—Harare 2040—for the city of Harare in Zimbabwe. Harare was in need of a strategy to address its current housing crisis and equip it with the tools needed to work with stakeholders in many capacities related to land use planning, connectivity and accessibility, infrastructure and services provision, water management, etc. while remaining sensitive to local and cultural contexts. In addition to proposing a plan to aid with Harare’s housing crisis, the project intended to propose a long-term sustainable urban development strategy for the city.
The project in Harare fostered a collaborative channel for American and Zimbabwean students to work together in design studios and through workshops.
The project’s principal objectives included:
- the protection of endangered natural resources within or adjacent to the areas to be urbanized,
- agricultural production existing or to be incorporated into the plan,
- water management and sanitation,
- mobility and connectivity, housing policy
