Cong Liu

Cong Liu is a 2023 Master of Architecture candidate at the Weitzman School of Design.
Having earned a Bachelor of Architecture and a Master of Architecture Informatics from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), she opted to pursue further studies in digital design at the University of Pennsylvania. This decision was motivated by her desire to expand her design perspective and enhance her programming abilities.
During her time at Penn, she was involved in Studio 704 under the guidance of Prof. Mette Ramsgaard Thomsen. This studio focused on the use of biomaterials and the collaboration between humans and robots, with a particular emphasis on their interaction and complementary capabilities. Through this experience, she not only gained a deeper understanding of digital-supported design and acquired relevant software skills, but also discovered the value of interdisciplinary thinking in improving our living environment. Additionally, she recognized the potential of digital tools to support the design decision-making process.
She believes that continuous innovation based on tradition and making designs that go beyond tradition can make our lives better. The discipline of architecture must not only keep apace with developments of automated methods but also develop a creative and critical approach to the increasingly automated means by which buildings are designed and realized, re-casting it as an opportunity to engage in design with greater degrees of holistic thinking while engaging in material and production decisions.
