Shuyi Hao

Shuyi is a landscape architect who has recently graduated from a 3-year MLA program at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to her time at UPenn, Shuyi obtained a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Liverpool, UK, and gained professional experience in both architecture and landscape architecture in China.
Shuyi’s design philosophy is rooted in the belief that landscape design can alter perception and build new relationships between humans and their surrounding environment. Her work considered the regional cultural and ecological contexts, site constraints, and careful material choices that incorporate plant species. She approaches each project with a unique understanding of the site characteristics, juxtaposed with a design position that can lead the place to an alternative future.
During her time at UPenn, Shuyi has honed her skills through her work as a teaching assistant for MEDIA I and STUDIO II, and as a research assistant in EMLab, where she contributes to a project aimed at building resiliency for the salt marsh landscape in New Jersey in the face of a rising sea level.
