Camden Gateway District Plan
Every day, thousands of residents of the Camden, New Jersey, suburbs drive through the Gateway, on Interstate 676 and U.S. Route 30, but there is little reason for them to actually stop in Camden. At the same time, the freeway interchange prevents Camden residents from crossing the city by foot, rail, or even car. The Gateway is both regionally connected and locally disconnected.
The premise of this studio was to create a scenario where Camden can remove mobility barriers as well as overcome ecological, economic, and community barriers. In this scenario, the studio recommends Camden to reclaim land back from the highway, dedicate 88 acres to new developments, and 110 acres for a new open space. The studio’s final plan aims to provide Camden Community Partnership and the City of Camden with the materials and vision to pursue the USDOT’s Reconnecting Communities Grant.
