Megan Ryerson, UPS Chair of Transportation Associate Dean for Research here at the Weitzman School, has written an opinion article for The Hill in which she raises concerns over the current funding of airports across America. She asks, “…in the COVID-19 era, does the U.S. need all these airports?” The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act has been funding airports across the world and Ryerson believes that the second round of CARES Act funding should aim to reform the Aviation sector, not save it in its current state. In light of not only the current pandemic, but also structural racism, Ryerson believes that creating a more efficient, equitable, and climate-friendly transportation system should be the priority. She goes on to explain three steps of reform to help restructure the aviation sector. This article was so interesting and insightful! You can read the piece here.
