The Cosmic Apartment: Rethinking Dwellings As Thresholds in Dense Cities
Apartments today commune neither with the sky nor with the earth. In these context-less “white boxes,” I dreamed of mysterious caves and the treetops of forests and yearned for dwellings that seemed impossible in our cities. Why do we never build the dwellings that we dream of?
Since prehistory, we have been delighted by the powerful unknown and have yearned communion with it. The Above – high in the sky and the Below – deep in the earth, complete the vertical space that is the cosmos. I explore an approach to designing multi-family residences that strengthen our connection to the cosmos by reintroducing the Above and Below in each apartment unit. In this way, every unit becomes a threshold to the cosmos where the mundane activities of life are played out during our constant journey through the cosmos.
The aggregations I propose can be built on top of low-density structures as a tool to densify the city and its suburbs. The design itself is optimized for density. The quality of darkness signature to caves allows for deeper sections while improving spatial experience.
