Cartagena is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its impressive walls and fortifications that historically protected the city from invaders. The walls and fortifications are a major tourist attraction in the city. With the influx of tourists entering the city looking for a place to stay, the need for housing increased. However, this demand for accommodations has led to increased property prices and, in turn, the gentrification of many areas of the historic center.
