This independent study explores the connection between landscape and choreographic thinking and between research and performance. The course holds at its core that thinking critically about landscape involves thinking critically about bodies (both human and non-human) and the reciprocal and co-constructed relationships between them.
The first component of this independent study involved tracing and mapping the lineages of practitioners and ideas working between landscape and choreographic thinking, with particular emphasis on artistic and design practice after 1970. Through spatial analysis of site-specific choreographic works, the second part of the course focused on choreography and performance as forms of spatial research and design.
This research establishes a foundation for understanding how the intersection of landscape and choreography have evolved since the collaborative works of Lawrence and Anna Halprin. It also outlines key concepts, precedents, and practices to inform the syllabus for an independent studio that focuses on choreographic and performative modes of landscape practice.
