Mapping Neighborhood Trajectories

Over the past several decades, the US population has become increasingly racially and ethnically diverse. These national demographic trends have reshaped local neighborhoods, but with considerable variation depending on metropolitan-scale population dynamics. Our interactive dashboard brings to life a comprehensive, multi-scalar study of how neighborhood racial and ethnic compositions have evolved in 66 US metropolitan areas from 1990 to 2020. We use an unsupervised time series clustering approach to group neighborhoods by their racial trajectories, uncovering long term trends and addressing the limitations of existing static classifications. The web-based tool could assist policymakers and city planners, by revealing regional patterns to guide integration policies, and local patterns to inform accessible urban design.
