Inspired by techniques of pop art giant, James Rosenquist, our design research focused on the role of the colorful streak in his work. Within his painting work, there are many pieces that incorporate techniques of long streaks of color, and slivers of intermixing color fields. This comes from his representation of shiny, metallic materiality. With the aid of machine learning style transfer tools, we isolated these color streaks and began to develop three dimensional techniques to make these color streaks spatial.
Our building is composed of a series of large concrete figures who are pierced or cut with these color streaks. The deep figure ground on the facade produces deep window apertures on the façade as well as smaller galleries and public spaces on the interior. On the façade, the color streaks are visible through bright red metallic panels that emphasize the deep facade in contrast to the concrete figures. When the building is viewed at night the color streaks are illuminated from the interior and the concrete forms they cut through recede. Through the day –the experience is a living and dynamic art work.
