Sien Hang Cheng

Sien Hang Cheng (Carl) is a Master of Architecture I candidate at Stuart Weitzman School of Design with a certificate in Integrated Product Design. Carl has been in 6 design studios including studios lead by Thom Mayne (701), Marion Weiss (704), Robert Stuart-Smith (602), Hina Jamelle (601), Andrew Saunders (502) and Danielle Willems (501).

Carl is interested in the interlink between formal gesture and the functional performance of design; exploring the possibilities of how the two could compliment and create an architectural solution that is greater than the sum of its parts. Carl is always questioning the program of the brief, and strives to create an innovative solution that interrogates the status quo.

In Marion Weiss's 704 studio, the project explores how to create an integrated experience interlacing a museum and the landscape; ultimately designing a curated journey that stitches the past and present of Los Angeles, unearthing artifacts that is archived in the exhibition and reflected in the tectonics of the building.

Carl is also interested in urbanism, and explored this in Thom Mayne's 701 studio that investigated the relationship between the new and the existing urban fabric, generating frameworks of relational and operational systems based on urban activities.
