Squares, Ovals, Triangles & Bars: Critically Conceptualizing and Crafting Urban Public Space

The focus of this studio is the detailed physical design of a discrete piece of urban public space. Our work endeavors to cultivate individual perspectives on the intellectual conceptualization and physical crafting of a legible space of social collection and activity. That is, the studio will engage critical ideas around the occupation of public space, as well as its making. In this work we will analytically discuss the implications of physical design propositions, rather than remaining content with the potentials of abstract design strategies. While the studio will be highly structured in terms of its method and rhythm over the first half of the semester, the particular themes, agendas, preoccupations, and predilections of individual projects that emerge will be at the sole discretion of studio participants.
