Copenhagen (A Future Framework for Refshaleøen)
The studio engages with the complexities of Refshaleøen in Copenhagen and considers:
- The historic development of Refshaleøen and its relation to the growth of the broader city of Copenhagen.
- Refshaleøen’s environmental conditions and vulnerability to climate change.
- The current social and cultural life of the district, including the types of uses and activities it hosts, as well as its evolving character.
- The role the area plays in the social and economic life of Copenhagen’s residents, visitors, and tourists.
- The range of existing plans and ongoing debates about the site’s future, including considerations for the future of the wasterwater plant on site, transit infrastructure, and the proposal for the Lynetteholm extension into the harbor.
Based upon this analysis, the students develop proposals for the future transformation of the peninsula that grapple with the social, cultural, environmental, and physical aspects of this unique urban context. The studio aims to strategically respond to the City’s current housing development pressures while preserving aspects of Refshaleøen’s unique sense of place.
