Hamam: Bathhouse in Side, Türkiye
The studio focuses on designing a bathhouse facility in the coastal town of Side, Turkey. Side is among the most significant Greco-Roman archaeological sites in Pamphylia. Over time, modern-day Side has grown around these historical remains, functioning primarily as an upscale tourist destination. This peculiar architectural juxtaposition—where ancient ruins and contemporary guest amenities literally intertwine—defines Side’s character.
The proposed bathhouse is located within the ruins of an ancient one, creating a rich context for exploration. The studio’s research focuses on three primary factors: first, the interplay between ancient and contemporary architecture; second, the integration of water and topography as essential design elements; and third, the bathhouse’s cultural and aesthetic function in the context of contemporary Side.
