Profile
Hometown: Eagan, MN
Education Background: University of Nebraska-Lincoln
How did you get interested in your field?
I have always been interested in design. What really brought me to architecture was the ability to connect people and the built environment around them. I wanted to pursue something that allowed me to address climate issues and build for the future.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
I am originally from St. Paul, Minnesota and studied architecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Why did you choose Penn?
Penn had always been high on my list when I was looking at grad schools. Weitzman architecture allowed me to get a different kind of education than my undergrad. I have always admired the work that is produced here and was interested in many of the studios and professors. I also wanted to live on the east coast so Philadelphia was a big draw.
What has been your favorite class so far?
There have been some really great classes that I’ve taken at Penn. I am currently in the Matter, Making, and Testing elective with Richard Garber. We are pushing the design limits of precast panels and build them at full scale in collaboration with precast professionals.
What are you learning right now that will help you in the future?
There are some incredible courses here at Penn that set you up for the professional setting. Professional Practice with Philip Ryan is super applicable course that not only gives valuable insight into architecture firms and the profession but is a really engaging course that we are able to touch on and discuss current events within the architectural community. Philip is extremely knowledgeable on what it takes to run a firm as well as work in one.
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
There is always so much going on in the city and the food is amazing. Center City is just across the river from campus which makes it easy to walk downtown.
What kinds of activities and/or organizations are you involved in?
I have been a TA for a studio which has allowed me to connect with students in other years. There are also many social events around the school that I participate in!
What are your career ambitions?
I want to work in a firm that has a focus on sustainably conscious design that works alongside communities. I would love to work somewhere along the east coast.
