Profile
Hometown: Johnstown, NY
Education Background: B.A. Architecture, Clemson University
How did you get interested in your field?
I became interested in architecture through traveling and seeing the ways that different people, cultures, and climates have unique relationships to the built space around them. The architectural process is a massive collaborative effort, and as architects, we have an incredible opportunity to coordinate this effort. I’m fascinated by that process and specifically, our responsibility in that process for the interaction of architecture with climate and ecological systems.
What was your background prior to coming to Penn?
Prior to Penn, I completed my B.A. Architecture at Clemson University with minors in Business Administration and Film Studies. I came to Penn directly after graduating from undergrad, and have worked at a number of architecture offices completing summer internships in design and research.
Why did you choose Penn?
I chose Penn because the high level of design thinking provided me with an outlet to advance my interests and passions surrounding the field of architecture in both practice and research. I was confident that the faculty in conjunction with the urban setting of Penn would be an ideal setting to work toward becoming a licensed architect.
What has been your favorite class so far?
My favorite class has been a seminar called Archigram & Its Legacies which studied some of the visionary counter-culture architectural groups of the 1960s.
What are you learning right now that will help you in the future?
I’m constantly learning how to advance design ideas through a variety of tools and methodologies in studio that constantly challenges me to push the boundaries of design and representation. This level of critical thinking will help me in the future by being able to adapt to the challenges of projects in practice.
What do you like best about Philadelphia?
I enjoy being able to participate in different activities always happening around the city with my friends. I’ve run a half marathon in the city, attend many film screenings, and like to try new restaurants when I can.
What kinds of activities and/or organizations are you involved in?
I am currently the Co-President of the Student Council here at Weitzman. I’ve been involved with StuCo all three years of my time here and appreciate being able to advocate for students and promote changes and initiatives that support the wellbeing of the student body.
What are your career ambitions?
My career ambitions are to work for an international office and gain experience as a licensed architect until I eventually hope to start my own practice concentrating on regenerative architecture and developing innovative solutions for the symbiosis of the built and natural environments.
