SHIFTING DIVIDES: Exploring Rural Economic and Health Outcome Disparities in the United States

This PennPlanning Equity Initiative Working Paper takes a careful look at the current magnitude of rural and urban-rural divides across America. It breaks new ground in three important ways. First, it explores both economic and health outcomes to identify states where rural counties are performing well on both (economic and health outcomes), performing well on one or the other, or performing well on neither. Second, it compares rural outcomes across states as well as urban-rural disparities within states. Third, it build on this dual economic-health outcome framework to identify regionally-specific approaches to making America’s 2100+ rural counties healthier and more prosperous.
