The Spring 2019 Sculpture Workshops are sponsored by the Fine Arts Department and are free and open to students, faculty, and staff. No prior experience necessary. To attend, please rsvp to Sculpture Technician, Willie Udell at wudell@design.upenn.edu to reserve a spot (no less than 3 days prior to each workshop). If attending, please wear shop appropriate clothing.
Armature/Free-Standing Structures
When: Friday, February 22nd, 2019 @ 4:30PM – 6:30PM
Where: Charles Addams Hall, Room 104
Description: In this workshop participants will be introduced to a variety of basic building techniques. We will build a large-scale armature out of linear and planar wooden stock, learning both how to make a structure stand as well as how to use the fundamentals of line and plane to create mass. Once complete, we will work through different surface treatments to create form onto this framework.
Mold-Making and Casting
When: Friday March 1st, 2019 @ 4:30PM – 6:30PM
Where: Charles Addams Hall, Room 104
Description: In this workshop participants will be exposed to three types of introductory mold-making techniques. In small groups, participants will make alginate body molds and as a larger group we will demonstrate a silicone blanket mold and a two-part box mold. We will also explore various casting techniques/materials in our molds.
Materials, Hardware, and Adhesives
When: Friday March 22nd, 2019 @ 4:30PM – 6:30PM
Where: Charles Addams Hall, Room 104
Description: In this workshop participants will be exposed to a wide range of both common and experimental materials, hardware, and adhesives for contemporary sculpture and building practices. We will consider usage, application, capability, and limitations as inspiration for form and function.
Framing and Crating
When: Friday April 5th, 2019 @ 4:30PM – 6:30PM
Where: Franklin Annex MFA Studio
Description: In this workshop participants will learn how to build various frames for 2-dimensional artwork as well as various conveyances for 2-D and 3-D artwork. We will discuss building approaches, techniques, and standards for archival display and storage of art.
